Ecology of Epiophlebia superstes
Epiophlebia superstes, which is called 'MUKASHI-TOMBO' meaning an ancient dragonfly in Japanese, inhabits the upper stream with rich vegetation in the forest. The flying season of Epiophlebia superstes is from late April to late May, one of the earliest dragonflies in Japan. Mature males come to the stream about at 9:00 a.m. to feed on small insects flying above the water. Females come to oviposit around at noon hiding from males which are searching for females to copulate. Females put eggs into some kinds of plants with soft tissue. This video introduces such oviposition behaviors.
